Ingredients

  • 1 lb 450 g ground beef
  • 1 small head of cabbage about 5 cups, chopped
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika optional
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup beef broth or water optional, for moisture
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese chopped parsley, red pepper flakes

Method

  1. Cook beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if needed and set aside.
  2. Sauté aromatics: In the same skillet, heat olive oil or butter. Add onion and garlic; cook until softened, about 2–3 minutes.
  3. Add cabbage: Stir in chopped cabbage, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage begins to soften.
  4. Combine: Return cooked beef to the skillet. Add a splash of beef broth or water if the mixture seems dry. Cook another 5 minutes until everything is heated through and cabbage is tender.
  5. Serve: Garnish with parsley or shredded cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • Great served as is, over rice, or alongside crusty bread.
  • Swap ground beef for ground turkey, chicken, or sausage.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce for a spicy version.
